Millenium seed bank

Melness Crofters Estate are delighted to hear from Dr Tim Rich that the seeds of some rare hawkweeds from the Estate have been deposited in the Millennium Seed Bank for long term conservation.  These include the very rare Skerray hawkweed Hieracium pauculidens from its only known extant site. It is a Scottish endemic only known from six or possibly seven sites and searches at four of those have failed to find it within the last ten years, so the Melness population is very important. The Millennium Seed Bank and their husbandry of the land allows rare plants to thrive.
